TV Dog Behaviourists & Quick Fixes
Why are there no quick fixes in dog training and behaviour?
Due to the likes of 'Dogs Behaving Badly' and 'It's Me or the Dog' behaviourists have got a reputation for being able to come into your home, and fix your dog with the click of their fingers.
Sadly this is not the case. These TV shows only show those cases that work, and also are cut and edited to take out the hours of work that has gone in to these dogs.
Think of it this way - if you were frightened of spiders, a psychologist couldn't simply come to your house and teach you not to be in 90 minutes?
Or if you had a habit of nail biting, we couldn't stop that behaviour in 1 hour? Yes we could make you less likely to do it by using aversive methods (foul tasting nails) but it's not going to change the fact you still want to do it, and take that aversive away and you'll do it again! Or if we smacked you every time you did it, then you'd probably still do it in secret!
Cesar Milan aka 'The Dog Whisperer' uses old outdates techniques to 'fix' dogs that people then try to copy which can end with devastating results.
In our initial assessment, we are mostly information gathering. We are looking at all those behaviours your dog is displaying, subtle changes in body language and demeanour, antecedents, the function and motivation of the behaviour.
We cannot do anything until we have established the above. Then we can begin. We can give you some things to get started with - but we're not gonna fix your dog in that session!
We need follow ups, we need to change our approach to find what works for you and your dog.
Dog behaviour is very complex, and they can't always communicate to us what the problem is - that's where we come in to try and help you understand this and how we can begin to change how they feel.
Please be patient with your dog, we are trying to build new pathways and association's in his brain when changing behaviour - it doesn't happen overnight.
You also get what you put in, even with a package booking, don't expect results without you putting in the work too - we are there to teach you how to teach your dog, and offer support & guidance.
**I must add to this - I LOVE Victoria Stillwell and her approach. She uses only positive training and I have read many of her books, so this is not an attack on her by any means, just that the TV show does not show the process!
